What Do ANCAP Safety Ratings Mean?
ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) is an independent body that crash-tests vehicles and rates them from 1 to 5 stars. Ratings assess four key areas: Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Vulnerable Road User Protection (pedestrians and cyclists), and Safety Assist Technologies.
Since 2018, ANCAP has used Euro NCAP protocols, meaning Australian ratings are directly comparable to European ratings. A 5-star rating requires not just strong crash performance, but also mandatory active safety features like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB).
Highest safety rating — excellent occupant and pedestrian protection
Good safety rating — strong overall protection with minor areas for improvement
Acceptable safety — meets minimum standards but lacks some modern safety features
Below average — missing several key safety technologies
Poor safety rating — significant safety concerns
